Potential of in-air PIXE for the Elemental Analysis of Dental Composites

An article recently published by Preoteasa et Al, demonstrates qualitative elemental analysis of dental composites and the abstract concludes that “in-air particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis of dental composites with the present setup has an important potential for various qualitative and semiquantitative applications”.

For the in-air PIXE experimental process, the 3MV Tandetron accelerator at HH-NIPNE is equipped with an AirBeam setup, where a “proton beam is extracted into the air” through one of Silson’s silicon nitride windows, which separates the high vacuum compartment from the atmospheric pressure target area.
