About Silson

Silson Ltd was established in 1994 to manufacture and supply thin, dielectric substrates for the emerging technology of x-ray microscopy.

The company’s first in-house laboratories were located at JBJ Business Park in Blisworth, on the outskirts of Northampton; a village most famous for having the longest navigable canal tunnel that is wide enough for two narrow boats.

Silson grew steadily, slowly acquiring adjacent parts of the building to acquire more space. However, by 2009, it was clear that any substantial expansion would require relocation to much bigger premises with better clean-rooms.

In 2015, the company relocated to a brand new purpose-built building at Insight Park in Southam, Warwickshire. The new facility included four linked ISO 7, class 10,000, clean-rooms with a full range of micro-fabrication equipment. Then in early 2019, Silson completed phase two of the development with additional laboratories, offices and conference rooms.

Initially, product offerings concentrated on traditional silicon nitride membranes, but Silson now produces membranes from low-stress silicon-rich nitride, silicon carbide and silicon. In addition to the plain membranes, there is also a wide range of added-value products including: environmental cells, membranes with integrated heaters, membranes with holes, and suspended graphene membranes.
Now in 2020, 26 years after the company’s formation, Silson has more than 800 customers across 50 countries and is well placed to embark on the next stage of its journey.
